The Internet of Things has given us a lot of opportunities, which makes our work and efforts even easier. Now our city is becoming a smart city using IoT, where you are getting all the facilities. In other words, our city is going to be a next-generation city. There are many cities where it has become a fully smart city.

Smart City Using IoT

When you hear about smart cities, what technology comes into your mind? Well, IoT (interconnected devices), sensors, 5G, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, cloud platforms, city infrastructure, and more. This is the core technology that smart cities use and it is going to change the future of the city.

To know how smart cities work? Their applications and examples. Let us first know what is actually Internet of Things?

What is IoT?

The Internet of Things refers to the smart devices that are connected to other devices using sensors, wifi, Bluetooth, etc. In other words, it is a network of physical devices and other items embedded with electronics, sensors, network connectivity, etc.

What is Smart City?

Smart city means having the best infrastructure in the city, where each device is connected to each other and where people get more efficient and high-quality lifestyle. Some of the technologies used to build a smart city, such as Internet of Things(IoT) devices, different types of senor, Augmented Reality, 5G, etc.

There are many cities like Toronto, Palo Alto, Dubai, Singapore, and even more where smart cities exist and also citizens are getting smart help.

What Problems can Smart City solve?

Such major problems we mostly find in a city are heavy traffic, regular accidents, breaking rules, lots of dust, garbage, and even more. These things make even city a dirty city. But IoT technology can make it a safer city.

Compared to a normal city, a developed city has a higher population and it continues to grow. As we all know, where there will be more people, the more you will get traffic, more water usage, consume more energy, pollution, and more waste. Smart city technology comes here to solve these problems.

IoT applications in smart cities

There are many applications of Internet of Things in a smart city. Most of them are being used in some developed countries.

Waste Management

As you see, people throw dust and garbage on the road instead of a dustbin. Somewhere the dustbin is either filled or not available. The waste management system can help us here. It uses some technology like GPS (attached in a dustbin), sensors (which detects that garbage is filled in the dustbin or not), smartphones so it could provide the status that the dustbin is full and have to pick up from here. The smartphone sends the pickup point to collect the garbage to the truck driver.

It can benefit us in many ways, it reduces the cost, saves time, and effort. This waste management system can clean the city fast and it can reduce pollution.

Smart Security

Smart security can make us safe and secure in public places. It can keep our city safe, crime-free, and secure city using new technologies. You may have seen a lot of cameras in a city in which some of them work and some not. These cameras only record the videos but what if it starts scanning people who are walking on the street.

Using artificial intelligence, sensors, and connected devices, existing cameras can identify every person, vehicle, etc. If someone is not identified, information is sent to the police or security guard through an alert system. So that they can be identified.

Suppose if any person has committed a crime and is roaming freely, it identifies him and sends an alert to the police so that they can be caught.

Traffic Management

Well, the more people live in a city, the more you will get movement of peoples or vehicles. Hyperloop technology has come up to reduce this problem. some countries are working on this project. With the help of this technology, you will be able to reach from one place to another in very little work time.

Actually, this is not the problem, in a city, lots of people suffer, where to park the vehicles. We waste our time, fuel to search for the parking area. The smart parking system helps to find the parking area. It uses sensors, applications, GPS technology to show all nearby parking places. The application notifies users the available parking area.

Smart Robots

Every countries are now using robots to save efforts. Robots are being used in Restaurants, Airports, Police Station, Companies, and even more. Robots help us in a lot of ways. Smart robocops are being used in Dubai with embedded sensors and cameras that use facial recognition technology.

Conclusion

Smart city is a big change for our generation and our next generation. A survey report says that in the next five years more than 75 billion IoT devices will be connected to each other. People will shift from rural to an urban area.

The Smart city becomes more smarter using Artificial Intelligence, sensors, and infrastructure then connecting them all using cloud storage(BigData) to store the collected data.

That’s all. I hope you guys enjoyed it, if you have any questions, please let me know in the comment section.

Thank You
